Australian Sailing Marine First Aid Kits for Racing Yachts
In February 2024 Australian Sailing published an Amendment to Special Regulations Part 2, Section 4 Portable Equipment and Supplies - Regulation 4.07.9 MEDICAL KIT. A copy of these new regulations can be found here
Australian Sailing recommends (from March 2024) that boats should carry one or more of the below first aid kits as specified by the organising authority in the race documents:
- Australian Sailing (2024) - Kit A - Inshore Kit
- Also used as a “Day Kit” for coastal and offshore races
- Australian Sailing (2024) - Kit B - Coastal Kit One
- Also used as a “Day Kit” for coastal and offshore races.
- Australian Sailing (2024) - Kit C - Coastal Kit Two
- For overnight coastal races or where medical evacuation is more difficult. Carry in ADDITION to Coastal Kit ONE
- Australian Sailing (2024) - Kit D - Offshore Kit
- For when medical evacuation is expected to be twenty-four hours or greater.
- Carry in ADDITION to Inshore Kit and Coastal Kits 1 and 2
If considered suitable, boats are able to carry one of the medical kits listed in the Amendment to the Special Regulations published in October 2022, until the 1 December 2028:
- Australian Sailing (2022) - Category 1 First Aid Kit for Racing Yachts
- Passage or races of long distances and well offshore, where yachts must be completely self-sufficient for extended periods of time, capable of withstanding storms and prepared to meet serious emergencies without the expectation of outside assistance.
- Australian Sailing (2022) - Category 2 First Aid Kit for Racing Yachts
- Offshore races of extended duration along or not far removed from shorelines or in large unprotected bays or lakes, where a high degree of self-sufficiency is required of the yachts.
- Australian Sailing (2022) - Category 3-4 First Aid Kit for Racing Yachts
- Races across open water, most of which is relatively protected or close to shorelines and not rounding major capes.

- Short races, close to shore in relatively warm or protected waters and normally held in daylight.
- Australian Sailing (2022) - Category 5-6-7 First Aid Kit for Racing Yachts
- Races with limited rescue availability, in protected waters, in daylight hours or in sheltered waters at night.

- Short races close to the shoreline in protected waters, in daylight hours only with effective rescue availability
or

- Short races in sheltered waters, in daylight hours only and with effective rescue availability.
It is still recommended that boats should complete a risk assessment and carry a first aid kit whose contents and storage reflects the likely conditions, duration of the passage and the number of people on board.
The new medical kits are designed to be simple and modular. As the race duration increases, additional medical kits (A + B + C + D) are added, rather than the classical Category 1-7.
The race committee is responsible for choosing which kit/s are required for their races and shall specific this in the notice of race.

Category 2 Scheduled Medicines Replacement Kit
Scheduled medicines must be stored at a temperature of 25 °C or less.
As the temperature in an enclosed yacht during the summer months can exceed 50 °C, Australian Sailing recommends all prescription medication be replaced at least annually.
When required Vessel Medic can supply a stand alone kit containing replacement scheduled medicines.

SOLAS First Aid Kit for Life Rafts
The notice of race may specify special safety regulations such as Rule 4.20 (Grab Bags to Accompany Liferafts). A yacht is required to have for each liferaft, a grab bag containing a first aid kit. If the yachts Category 1 or Category 2 first aid kit cannot be store in the grab bag a seperate SOLAS First Aid Kit will be required.
